Hello,

I need to locate the "tie strap terminal" on the back of my alternator.
2005 3.0L 135HP TKS
is it number 1 or number 2 in my picture?
Thank-you for your help.

Re: Tie strap terminal

We are missing something here Andrew, what makes you think there is a tie strap terminal on that alternator? and why do you "Need" to find something that isn't there?

Is this (see picture below) where you came up with that term? If so, you don't have that kind of alternator.

Re: Tie strap terminal

Hello,
The manual 26 says to:
EXCITATION CIRCUIT
1. Connect positive (+) voltmeter lead to tie strap terminal on alternator and negative (–)
lead to a ground terminal on alternator (Test 1).
2. Turn ignition switch to ON position and note voltmeter reading. Reading should be 1.3
to 2.5 volts.
If my alternator is different, what would be the test?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Tie strap terminal

Hello Don,
Manual 31 says the same thing:
SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 31 CHARGING SYSTEM
90-864260001 JUNE 2003 Page 4D-13
EXCITATION CIRCUIT
1. Connect the positive (+) voltmeter lead to the tie strap terminal on the alternator and the
negative (–) lead to a ground terminal on the alternator.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and note the voltmeter reading. The reading
should be 1.3 to 2.5 volts.

With engine at 1200 rpm battery reads 14.5VDC, and 32VAC, way above spec of 0,25VAC. It seems my diodes are faulty. Can they be replaced or do I buy a reconditioned alternator?
thanks for your help

Re: Tie strap terminal

Well Merc messed that up, you don't have a tie strap or a tie strap terminal on that alternator.

However, with 32VAC, you do have defective diodes, and yes they can be replaced. Any good starter/alternator/electric motor shop should be able to handle it a lot cheaper than a new alternator.
