Tigershark starter problem

I have a 1997 Tigershark 770. After being in storage, I have a starting problem. Battery is charged and the starter is whirring but seems to not be engaging the flywheel.

Does it have a starter pinion gear like a car that extends when the starter spins and retracts after starting? If so, is the likely place to look? If not, where should I be looking?

Does the starter have to be removed to get to the pinion gear or can it be accessed through the flywheel cover? Should I try to spray a lubricant, wack it with a hammer, or some other intervention we used in the 70's?

Thanks for any help! It will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Tigershark starter problem

770, is that a 3 cylinder? On my 639cc engine (2 cylinder) the starter is kind of lke a car starter, it has starterdrive that goes out as the motor spins. There are 2 bolts that hold it on. If water gets in there it rust up the spring. You may be able to clean it if you get lucky.

Does anyone know of an easy way to get a penetrating lubricant onto the bendix without complete disassembly?
