Tiller Conversions Seahorse 35

I’m about to save a 1960 (could be 1959) Super Sea Horse 35 -electric start model from
a shed up north where it’s sat for the greater part of it’s life . I don't yet have it
in hand – so no serial ## just yet.

Are there any known issues or idiosyncrasies with this particular model/vintage motor
beyond what one can normally expect with vintage outboards ?

I’m curious about converting it to tiller handle and what other Johnson models I might be able
to consider for the donor parts to achieve this ?
It’s got all of it’s controls at present but not entirely useful on my tender.

The claim is : it has good compression – no hard data to back that up though – so one of the first things i’ll
do before spending big $$ on it is a compression test :
What are considered in range of ‘healthy’ compression readings on this motor ?

assuming I’m going past GO on this one –
I expect to need to start arbitrarily with :
(aside from a good battery and fuel !)

gear oil change
a set of points and condenser
impeller kit
carb rebuild kit

less certain but would be too surprised to need:
fuel pump rebuild kit

any thoughts or previous experience comments on this model would be greatly appreciated
as well as a recommended parts source ?
cheers
Marc

They are great running engines, just wildly innefficent and they use 24:1 oil ratio... Sell it to someone who needs a good remote setup on a vintage boat.

Seek out a '80's to 90's Johnson/ Evinrude 20-35hp and you will be a lot happier

Hi Matt - thanks for your response - wildly inefficient in what sense ? fuel efficiency ?

In some ways the 1959 model 35 HP ( 1960 was 40 HP ) is better built and more rugged. than newer motors.------Tiller handles from the 28 / 33 models will fit.

Coils ARE shot unless they have already been replaced.

The tiller was an accessory. People used to remove them and throw them away or use them for a catfish club. Now everybody is looking for those old catfish clubs.

1958 Super Sea Horse 35 had great styling and is a desirable classic, if that is what it happens to be.

I had one back in "The Day". As I remember it, mine would average 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours on a tank of gas.

That is a 1959. 1960 was 40hp.

EDIT: This is the classic 1958 Super Sea Horse.1958 Johnson Super Sea Horse.jpg

Actually, it is used on a whole lot of 35-40-28-33-50-75 motors 1955 into the 1970's, with minor variations.img024.jpg

I had several of the 35/40hp Evinrude/Johnsons. Never considered them as overly thirsty. When I traded my 1960 40hp Lark for a 1964 60hp Sportfour, then I learned what "thirsty" was. I guess back in the day when gas was 35-40 cents a gallon, we didn't think much about how much gas we used. I recently had a 1957 Lark on a pontoon boat and it didn't seem to excessively burn gas. Great old motors.

I hear you on that point ! our old Chris Craft has a pair of Ford 427's in it , "thirsty'' has a whole new definition . For the SeaHorse I'll plan to always bring along an extra can of 'get-home' gas just in case.

I didn't specifically google your motor, but if he doesn't have new parts, nobody will.
