Hello friends i have recently replaced the points, and rebuilt the carb ect on my rude but now the tiller handle throttle markings do not line up, shift use to be pretty close to shift rpm marker while in the barrel it does run much better there is about a quarter inch of twist on the tiller that goes all the way from start rpm to slow and kill it seems to run better than before (i did the work)at all rpms the tiller rpm guide doesnt line up and stArt to kill are on the same quarter inch of twist any ideas? thanks alot ps. point are set at 20 with points follower set on -top- marking on crank

Hi & welcome!

I don't really follow from your description what the problem is. If it is that the engine RPM's are quite different at the throttle settings indicated on the tiller after doing the points than the RPM's were originally (?), I'd check the timing with a timing light to verify that it is really spot on. The flywheel is marked in 2 spots 180 degrees off... (cylinder 1 & 2)... those marks should fall between the 2 lines marked on the front edge of timing plate sitting under the flywheel.

Yes i lined the flywheel marks up with the lines but then would have to turn the tiller handle to line the points crank follower up with the (top) mark

Did you check the timing with a light while it is running? Also, I think you should look at the point setting procedure in a service manual... From your description, I still think the timing is off, but I can't predict whether it'd be advanced or retarded.

You shouldn't need to use the marks when setting the points... just turn the crank until the follower is on the highest point, then set to .020... Confirm proper timing with timing light. You can plop flywheel on loosely, and with spark plugs out, turn flywheel by hand. You can spin it well enough to fire a timing light and confirm that the timing marks line up and therefore point setting is good.... Do this for both sets of points. If good, tighten flywheel on, if not lift if off and re-adjust points, and re-check.

The timing light showed me that I failed miserably the first time I tried setting the points with a feeler gauge.
