Anybody out there know of a good way to extend the tiller handle (OMC or aftermarket) on my '99 Johnson 35? The stock handle is quite a ways from a good sitting position in my 1650 Lund Explorer. Thanks.

Looking at the parts breakdown, any of the aftermarket tiller extensions should work on that. The problem I see is the shifter, which will remain out of reach. It doesn't look like BRP makes an extension kit.

you may be able to fabricate something... not sure. Depends how handy you are with stuff.

you know, i do not think Lund would design a boat where the back bench is out of reach of the standard length tiller arm.

Crude but it works. One my 15 and 9.9 I took a piece of white PVC pipe and cut in from the end with a hack saw about 3 inches twice basically quartering the end. Then I just push it on the handle and it works. It will come loose but you just need to give it a push and it's good. Like I said, it's crude but one tug and it's off. I only ever use it when trolling. Best of luck. Rick.

if you really need one, a Minn Kota extension handle will work, and it available at Wally World. It has a rubber insert inside the handle and clamps down on your existing handle

Did you see TD's thread on diy stick steering? Way better than a tiller extension, I think.

Thanks to all who replied. I did call BRP to find they don't have a bolt on extension. The clamp on version from Minnkota works o.k. Restornator must not know Lunds very well 'cause my '00 Explorer Tiller has a fairly large splash well in front of the transom and combined with a short tiller arm on an OMC 35hp. it is quite a stretch even for a guy over 6' and lanky!

Most tiller handles are interchangeable and the length will vary with the HP of the motor, so almost any handle from a Johnson or Evinrude will fit. That is if this model uses the remote steering connection on the front of the motor as the tiller mount (most do).

The only complication may be the throttle cable, I put tiller handle from a 40 on my 90, just had to make a small bracket for the cable to work right, it was very easy.

You may also be able to extend the small tab the handle is connected to, secure it well and it should work.

That Minkota one didn't work on my '73 25HP. It didn't seem to get wide enough. I put it on the trolling motor instead.

you can always find a different grip for it, or a spare grip and take the rubber part off
