Can anyone give me a hint that might help me solve this problem? I'm an auto repair specialist, and don't know much about 2 strokes, so I bet any info will help. What I have is a 1960 Merc with a pressure fed Tillotson. Me and my father were fishing and ran through a little mud, tearing the impeller to peices. We didn't realize it at the time, so we continued accross the lake after we checked the prop. Other side of the lake, it started running like crap, spitting fuel out of the carb, and dying. We replaced the lower end seals, gaskets, and the water pump impeller. Runs a lot cooler now, but still runs the same, minus the spitting of fuel out of the carb(boiling fuel in the pump, I guess). Also after it runs a bit, there it this white oily substance at the carburetor inlet, like oil mixed with water, and the carburetor has quite a bit of condensation on it. I really hope somebody can help with this, I've never seen anything like it.

Condensation on a carb is ussally from iceing and iceing is caused by a lean condition which could make for a crabby running engine --Bob

Bob, now that you mention it, I did lean out the carb trying to get her to run better, but it seems that I can't get it lean enough. The richer the adjustment the more smoke and skipping; the leaner, less thick smoke and skipping, but by then the adjustment is bottomed out in it's seat.

If your that rich you must have a inlet leaking or the floats are to high

Re: Tillotson running rich

I did re-assemble the fuel pump with carb attached, applied pressure to the fuel system by way of the primer bulb, and when I dissassembled the fuel pump again I found wetness around the edge of the gasket. Before assembly I cleaned the fuel pump, diaphram, and gaskets until perfectly dry. I hope this is it, but I ordered a carb kit from oldmercs.com just in case. It's about time for a rebuild anyhow.

Thanks for your help, Bob!
