I have a 40 hp evinrude not sure what year but it has the dark blue color scheme. The motor will not go up or down. I have power to the relays and beleive they are ok since i switched then and nothing happened. I want to get to the trim motor and see if i have power there but I can not raise the out board motor. I have looked everywhere for the bleed screw but I do not see one . If someone can help me I would appreicate it

Welcome vanjan!

If your not sure of the year, post the model number and we can tell you the year. You'll find it on a plate, along with the serial number, on the port side transom bracket.

If you want to try the tilt motor, find the connection that leads to the trim motor from the relay pack. Should be a green and blue wire. You can hot wire the two to see if the motor is OK. Real easy.

Green is down and blue is up. So if you want the motor to run in the up direction, jump the battery positive side to the blue wire and the negative side to the green wire. Down is just the opposite. If the motor runs OK in both directions, that pretty much leaves out the motor as bad. You can then go back and check the relay pack....usually just dirty connections at the relay plugs.

Let us know what you find.

that motor is a 1993 ,,,, i believe ..there should be a manual release valve ,screw, on the starboard 2 thirds of the way down your transom mount .Screw that out a ways then see if ur leg will move up and down

I believe that the release screw on the 1993 model is accessed from the port side through the port side transom bracket. It should be opened a minimum of three turns.

It must be re-torqued to 45-55 in lbs before operating.

A very large screwdriver with a slot end that fits tightly. You don't want to bugger up the slot on the screw. They can be a bear to get loose sometimes. Some tapping on the screwdriver may help while turning it...

Re: tilt and trim by pass screw

well I finally got the motor raised and the trim motor is defiantly bad. I could never get the by pass screw loosen but i removed the #16 cap and #13 valve in order to release some fluid. The #15 nut that the needle valve slips in I back out 20 turns I have since reinstalled this by turning in 20 turns. The numbers that I am ref are from rickdbiboat's reply that shows the parts breakdown. I don,t know what this valve does so i won't know if it is reinstalled right .I do know it wasn't tight I turned in two turns and it could have been turrned more before i backed it out . what i am trying to say is is there a defianit setting for the # 15 screw/nut are will it be accurate enough by counting the turns, by the way thanks fleet Admiral rickdbiboats, Lieutenant commander ezeke and Seaman dreamchaser

When you reassemble the poppets and retainer plugs, screw in the retainer plugs, #16's, tight. They should not be lose. If left lose, they could work lose enough to leak fluid. The poppets will move back and forth depending on rotation of the pump, up or down, to direct the flow of fluid. Do be careful not to get any dirt or debis in around the vlv's.

I know of no rebuild kit for the T & T motor. You may get an auto electrical shop to build it. Others may know if there is a kit available.....That motor goes for around $180.00-$275.00 depending on what brand you get and where you get it...

Re: tilt and trim by pass screw

well I purchase a new trim motor and installed it. the tilt and trim works great now. Thanks to everyone who gave me advise. When I first started troubleshooting the tilt and trim I found a wire bundle with a connection right below the relays on the right side It has a white wire a green wire and a blue wire I opened the connedction and ran a jumper wire from the battery to the green wire and to the blue wire I got a lot of sparks and it gave a burnt smell.the wire bundle goes up under the flywheel to what i think is the timer coil it attaches to a linkage arm. The motor will not start now I know it is something I did based on what I have told you will this cause the motor not to start.

Those power packs run on smoke. When you let it out they stop working.
