Re: tilt and trim clicks but doesnt work

I had to release the manual then use a come a long and gently get it up then lifted it from there. I guess they are just heavy to lift by hand. I found out that I had a pin hole in the motor that allowed salt water to get to the motor so it has to be replaced. Thanks for all the help on here. it made it 12 yrs so thats good for a trim motor Im sure. good luck

Arco makes a replacement motor with a special coating that helps them last longer; you might want to check that out.

Re: tilt and trim clicks but doesnt work

I have a '99 Johnson 115hp and am having this same problem with the PTT. I was raising the motor using the tilt switch on the motor when it got about half way up and just quit. It wouldn't go up or down after that. I removed the hood and can hear a click when I hit the up or down button. Same behavior when I try from the throttle switch, motor switch, or the bow switch. I charged the battery and also tried jumping it. Click is all I get. I loosened the manual release and the motor lowered, but I cannot manually raise it. I'd like to manually raise it to get it to a shop, but I can't budge it even with the release screw loose. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If its in neutral you can lift the leg by hand, I do it on my 150.
Put pressure on it and hold it, as it overcomes hydrolic backpressure it will start to move in a second or two, once it starts moving keep it moving.

Thanks for the Arco. it here where I live so that helps. just not for sure how much they will charge. cheapest found is $106.00 on ebay. found them as much as $270 dollars. boy did my jaw drop. lol. anyway, Thanks for all the help. also I did loosen the manual release and the motor was still had to lift but at least the hydraulics are still in great shape. while its down, Im going to repaint the bottom. got the paint a few days ago. its going to match the motor which would look great. Thanks again guys. maybe nit fun but its also a great learning experience for me so I will know what to do next time.

Re: tilt and trim clicks but doesnt work

Thanks for the tips. I was out of town and was happy to see the replies when I returned! Anyway, I tried several different ways (including my 19 year old son doing a leg press from under the boat while I used a lever from above) to lift the motor with the manual release loose but no luck. I'm wondering if we have a stuck piston if that's possible.

Another guy said I should try tapping on the TNT motor. I was able to sneak a flat screw driver between the bracket and tap on the motor. To my amazement it started working again. I don't think I'll trust it for too long though.

Thanks again for the help!

Re: tilt and trim clicks but doesnt work

Sorry havent been on lately. what you can do is use a come along and release the manual valve on the left side of the motor. then take a come a long and just slowly start to winch it up. you will notice that once you move it about maybe two inches, it will then be easy to come up with two people. once you get it up to where you can lock it. you may have the four bolts type like mine but they do have a three bolt too. anyway, if you can reach the back bolts, dont push it and if you notice that the bolts are easy to break so dont even push it. just get some heat and remove the two pins holding the hydraulic system. its real easy I found out. once you do that then you can heat the bolts if needed and remove the motor. since you tapped it and its moving, you may have a fixable problem. I found a pin hole that allowed water to get in there. you can sand and j-b weld the top of the motor and sand it and paint it with a good primer and clean all the connections. its the part the metal top connects to. if that piece has no damage, then you can clean it like new and seal it from any saltwater or moisture. mines chipped and damage so I dont think I can save mine. Arco here in Pensacola carries the motors for around 140.00 dollars which is the cheapest I have found. . Hope this helps. Steve
