Tilt and trim getting "whiny" and crackly in the cold.

Hey guys,

Aside from adding fluid, I don't have much experience in the TnT dept. I do know that these systems will show their first signs of failure on cold days. ( I guess the seals contract in the cold.) My motor (v4 looper) will run through the entire tilt and trim range from top to bottom, but when you first try and raise it, it gets a little whiny for a second and has a little delay before the motor starts to raise. You can also hear a little bit of crackling for the first few seconds. Ill try and post a video tonight.

Anyways, would a simply drain and fill with fresh fluid help? Maybe just top the system off and try and run any air out of the lines? Or should I just leave it alone until it inevitably will need to have the cylinders rebuilt? Thanks fellas.

If you fully retract the trim rams there can be a slight pause in movement until the trim rams extend and contact the motor.

Ok, well thats good to know. I know where the fill screw is, but should I drain the fluid and fill it up with new? I know for a fact it has been 7 years since it has been serviced.

Normally a Dextron II type ATF is specified for most PTT units. OEMs have their own PTT fluid as well.

I would get a factory service manual, it makes it simple. We have a force 125hp, straight 30 weight no detergent.

Now the T&T, it's not broken yet, baby it's cold outside, you would be moving slow too. Any oil leaking out of the ram seals? If so better replace the seals.

Make sure rams are fully retracted/all the way in before you top up, or you will overfill and wreck the motor.

Thanks man. Got a service manual Ill have to take a look. No oil leaking, thank goodness!! I actually have an old TnT setup laying around. Going to strip down the paint and rebuild the cylinders to have a spare.
