whenever I hit the tilt/trim button on throttle there is a clicking noise. Could someone let me know if this could be a bad connection, bad motor or possible the relay is out. the engine is a 79 evinrude 85hp outboard. the trim is not working at all and I need a direction on where to begin my troubleshoot. thanks for your help

You probably are hearing the up solenoid clicking. Look around the transom area for a little black box for the TNT unit. The solenoid is in there.

Is the TNT unit operating OK?

yes evinrude trouble...do you possible know which way to go with this? should I start with the relay? Do you think the motor is bad if I am hearing clicks when I try and run the tilt/trim motor? thanks for your help

Re: tilt and trim motor help

thanks for the quick response OBJ...I found the black box that you discribed, it has a starter solenoid and wiring for the trim motor and the main wiring for the battery...is it in here? or would there be a seperate blk box? and what's a TNT?

No...that's it Dave....the solenoid is the "UP" solenoid. Leave the cover off the box and hit the "UP" button. You will probably hear it click.

Is the TNT working properly....going up and down OK? Is the click the only thing your worried about?

no I don't know if the TNT is working because the motor doesn't work at all...would this have anything to do with the solenoid?

Re: tilt and trim motor help

I think at this point if you are hearing the relays click when you push the up/down buttons, I woud go directly to the motor with 12 volts and see if it works. Hook up 12 volts directly to wires coming off the motor. Ir should go either up or down. Reverse the wires and it should go the other way. If it goes nowhere, the motor is shot. E-bay usually has some great deals on TNT(Tilt and Trim) motors if needed...

Re: tilt and trim motor help

We probably ought to verify if this is a two or three wire motor. 79's had the three wire units. David, could you maybe post the model number of the engine or at least see how many wires are going to the TNT motor?
