Tilt and Trim motor question

I have a 70hp Force outboard with the tilt/trim switch on the throttle. The t/t motor was not working very well so I took the motor out and checked condition and cleaned the contact, brushes and armature. When I reinstalled it ran smooth and quiet in both directions, but for only about half the up or down position and then it would stop like it had no power ( circuit breaker? ). After about 1-2 minutes I could run it again for 5 seconds or so and again it stops. This went on for quite few times. Acts like a thermal or breaker goes out and then resets itself. Any thoughts on what exactly is going on. I don't know if the relays could do this and both the up and down relays doing it makes me think it's a problem common to both. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to iboats.

Have you checked the fluid level?

No I haven't. How do you check the level?
Thanks
Since I posted this reply I've read in other posts that maybe you tilt the motor all the way in the up position and then remove a plug at the top of a reservoir. Does this sound right? I have some Dextron 111 transmission fluid (red) . Is this what I would add if it's needed? It's been raining all day so I haven't been able to get down to my boat to check anything yet. Thanks

Re: Tilt and Trim motor question

What year is the motor?
If it is a 1991-1995 70 hp, you lower the motor all the way down.
Then remove the hex cap on the side. Be careful, it is plastic, don't over tighten it, just snug it up after filling.

As for fluid, some came with tilt n trim or trans fluid, But some came with 30 wt non detergent motor oil. So dip a screwdriver tip into the reservoir and see what you have in there.

After filling and replacing the cap, run the motor up and down a few times, then recheck the fluid level.

Let us know if this fixes the problem.

Re: Tilt and Trim motor question

Roscoe, I did find the reservoir a bit low. I added total about 2 oz after filling and cycling a few times. Now it is full, but the motor only runs for about half an up or down cycle before stopping. After 2 minutes it will run again. It runs smooth while moving. It seems like an overload that resets after cooling down, but I don't have an electrical schematic to use to troubleshoot. I'm in the process of trying to get one via Ebay, but it will be awhile. Any thoughts? I've been trying to pry off the cover over the trim switch on the throttle, but it acts like it's glued on. I wanted to look at the switch wiring.

Thanks, John

Re: Tilt and Trim motor question

The breaker for the TNT is under the engine hood on the port side. This is on my 1987 '85HP. You haven't identified what motor you are working on.

The wiring of the TNT is very simple. The switch activates either the up or down relay. In the OFF position both relay outputs are grounded. Whichever relay you activate connects that output to +12 volts. The pump motor spins in both directions, one for up and one for down. The direction is determined by the polarity of the applied voltage.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a 1995 70hp Force outboard. Would the breaker you speak of reset itself?? If so, does it sound like it might be the trim motor drawing too much current? Thanks for the help!
