This is a question that requires one of the many mighty wise ones on this forum. We have a tilt and trim unit off a 1989 60hp johnson 3 cyl. that we salvaged. current part number 434803. We are working on a 1979 V4 85hp johnson that someone cut the tilt and trim cable off at the motor. The motor/cable assembly is $300, and the complete tilt and trim unit has a current part number of 435946. We have it off the motor and bot units look the same except that the diameter of the motor and reservoir on tghe 60hp unit are slightly smaller. All the holes appear to line up. Are there any problems with using the 60hp unit on the 85hp?

Jim....I believe the motor off the 79' rig is a three wire motor and the 89' is a two wire motor. Better make sure or your going to have a wireing nightmare.

not a problem as rest of wiring harness is new and control box is modern also. We also have to put new solenoids in. If that is the only problem, we can do this piece of cake.

OK partner. If I understand your post, the relay box you have contains two relays (one up and one down)?

Re: tilt and trim motor swap

85hp johnson came out of a barn, we have no relay box at all, we will just order the corrrect one, and hide it under the cover. (what a find, 135psi + on all cyls. good spark all around, and lower unit passed pressure vacumn test with flying colors. just installed a new water pump) The only reason we are changing the tilt and trim unit is that the person who took the motor off the boat cut the wiring for the tilt and trim right at the motor, we tested it and it works, just will be using it in salt and want it reliable.
