I have a 1979 70HP Evinrude Motor # 70973R and I need to know where to buy the kit to fix the power tilt and trim. It is leaking bad around the Black circles with all the holes in the where the cyclinders come through. I was wondering if someone could tell me where to get these and how hard are they to replace. Thanks

Re: Tilt and Trim problems

The seals on the trim pistons are an easy fix and will take every bit of 30 minutes to replace with a cost of about $30. The one large tilt piston, on the other hand........ I purchased my parts at http://www.bestboatparts.com although I'm sure you can buy them here. You will need a face pin spanner wrench to remove the trim cylinder end caps. You will likely find these on eBay rather cheap. Go to http://www.brp.com and have a look at your exploded parts diagram of the trim assembly to locate the corresponding seal part #'s. Raise the outboard to the fully trimmed position and lock it in place. Drain all the fluid and run the trim cylinders to the full "in" positon. Remove the end caps, pull out the trim cylinder rods/pistons, replace all the seals on the trim pistons as well as the end caps, reinstall trim rods, replace end caps, refill the system with fresh trim fluid, and cycle the unit to the fully raised position, completely fill the reservoir, raise and lower the unit several times to bleed all the air. Re-check fluid levels and repeat the cycling to ensure all air is extracted. Good luck.......... ALAN

I tried both sites, It doesnt show nothing about the power tilt and trim unit. Unless i call them and they would have the parts. Thanks for all the info.

Your rod seals are bad. The outer seal you see is actually a wiper and doens't contain the fluid.

I have had great success simply removing the seal glands and taking them up to you local hydraulic shop. Those guys are usually good to work with and they will switch out the rod seals on the spot.

O.K........ Click here............ http://www.brp.com/en-US/Related.Products/Parts.htm

Now....... Under the "Parts Heading" click on "Visit the site now".

Next...... Click on the green check mark in the box located in the top right hand corner and select "View Parts Catalogs"

Now....... Click on the "Go" button beside the box, again in the upper right hand corner of your screen, that says "Evinrude".

Now...... Select the appropriate folders for your year, horsepower, and model number.

Yours IS listed. There is an exploded diagram for your unit available here, WITH the available part numbers for EVERY seal. I would not recommend visiting the local hydrolics shop, although I'm sure they could possibly have something that will work. There has likely been an update to the replacement seals you are trying to acquire. Get the right parts that were designed for the unit and save yourself a possible hassle. Good luck............ ALAN

EDIT: I checked the site for your outboard and it, in fact, does not list a trim unit for your outboard. Obviously someone has retrofitted it to accomodate the unit you have in place. Not uncommon. If you can get some casting numbers off the unit, this would be a big help in assisting you in finding the parts diagrams and part numbers that you need for it.
