Tilt and trim question

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum, but I have quickly seen that there is a lot of knowledge on here. I just picked up an old boat for a project to keep me busy. Before the wisecracks start, I know it will keep me busy (and probably broke! :) ). It's a 1962 MFG Seaway 19 foot. It was sitting for about 9 years uncovered. So, I cleaned it out and pressure washed it. It has a 74 Mercury 1500 on it. The previous owner states it was running when he parked it. For health reasons, he wasn't able to take it out anymore. Anyways, I know I have a big project here.
I pulled the plugs, sprayed some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders, and hooked the battery up the other day. Two things things I learned in the process: 1. It wouldn't crank. I figured out the problem is in the harness (at least that's the first problem). 2. The trim motor kicks in for both up and down. It lifts the motor just fine, however it doesn't let it back down. When you push the button to bring it down, you can hear the motor spin, but nothing happens. It is a completely different sound than when it is going up.
A question about that tilt.
I started looking at Amazon and EBay and found a lot of pump and motor combinations. The ones that are listed for my motor are crazily expensive. Is there any reason I would have to use the one designed for this motor, or can I use a different model? My thought is that it is a separate entity, and as long as it has the same plumbing (i.e. two pressure lines and two return lines) and is designed to lift that large of a motor, it should work. Is there something I'm missing here?
Anyways, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Howdy Robert

Looks like you have a full basket. While the harness may be the issue with the motor turning over, I'm going out on a limb it probably has other issues. As for the trim bleed the system and see if there is anything in there but oil

I'm sure it's gonna have all sorts of issues. Oh well, I wanted a project. Thanks for the advice on the trim and tilt. As soon as I get another chance to work on it I'll give it a shot and let you know. That darn paying work keeps getting in the way! On a happy note, I did manage to get the steering figured out today. It was completely frozen. Took me about an hour of beating on it with a hammer and spraying PB Blaster to break it loose. Then another hour with a plumber's pipe cleaner to clean the tilt pin. :)

Hi Robert, I've got a similar issue. I bought an old guy's 1973 barn queen last year and despite being mint all around, it didn't have tilt/trim. He provided a full system he bought off eBay in a cardboard box with the sale. I got around to bench testing the system yesterday and it lifted the weight I hung on it fine, but the starboard ram leaks like a sieve as does the output hose to the same ram. I also need to do some fabrication to get the pump to fit and mount under my transom. Right now, my options are to either buy rebuilt ram and new hose from Twin City Outboard (~$200), try rebuilding the ram myself from a kit or see if a local hydro shop might do the rebuild and make up a new hose. I'm reluctant to do any installation work or fabrication until I know the best and cheapest way to get it working properly.
