I have a 1978 Johnson Javelin 85hp v-4.
The two actuator pistons on either side of the tilt piston are leaking hydraulic fluid from around the pistons. I know these gaskets need to be replaced. How do you get the covers off.
Four holes around the piston hold the cover on.
I have tried a punch, phillips screw driver, caliper wrench...still to no avail/
What kind of wrench will remove this cover? Spanner? Dont know?
Also how hard is it to change out the gaskets?
Thanks for the help....jas.....

Re: Tilt and Trim Question

Hi jasper...welcome to iboats.

You need a really good spanner wrench to remove the piston top. Considerable force must be applied to get the thing to screw out.

Do you have the unit out on the workbench or is it still on the motor? I've have had on occasion to put the cylinder in a vise where I could get some leverage on the wrench.

I would also get a manual if you don't have one.

Keep us posted.

Re: Tilt and Trim Question

Thanks for the info....i still have the unit on the boat. I have tried everything but a spanner.
I will keep trying. This is my days off project, little bits at a time. Bought boat from elderly lady who"s hubby passed away three years ago.
Got a good deal, just trying to fix alittle at a time. Have alot to do yet.
Those spanner wrenches are high dollar. Trying to eliminate taking boat to shop.
I can do most of the work myself, no hurry, just bewildered.
I can get the gaskets and seals from the boat shop, but they want to much $$$ for labor to install, and wont offer ant advice without $$$$
....jas......

Get a lengh of steel strap, cut into 2, 10 or 12" lengths. Drill a 1/4" hole on end of each strap, and bolt together so it act's like a dividers. put a #10 bolt with jam nuts on each end, and saw off bolt heads. You now have a spanner.

Re: Tilt and Trim Question

when you change out the quad rings make sure the lip seals are facing the same direction as the old ones use some power trim oil to lightly lube o-rings so you don't cut them when you reassemble it is not hard to rebuild once you get it apart

Re: Tilt and Trim Question

Thanks for the info on the homemade spanner.
I will try it in the a.m and keep you posted.
I have another version in the works, similar to that one explained.
Once i get that step done i will start on the o-rings, thanks for the great advice.
Question...is there more than one o-ring or gasket to replace in the housing? the gestapo boat shop says there are 4 that go in it?
I bought this boat and motor on a inlaw family deal,15.50 82 kingfisher v-hull bass boat, with the 85hp Johnson Javelin motor, motorguide trolling motor.
Inside the motor cover reads 1978 guidlines for motor compliance. Spotless inside, very well kept untill the gentleman became ill.
Had to dig the tires out of the pine straw, replaced tires, repacked bearing buddys, dragged to the house 6o miles to my place.
Astro turf carpet replaced due to weathering, with fleccoat, with sealer..looks sharp.
Drained and cleaned out fuel tank...b-1 chemtool.
Un froze steering cable at motor. Replaced wiring on trailer, lights etc. Hitch needs replacing, but still works. Red river Custom Trailer.
Trim motor comes on but just buzzes, working on it as stated peviously. Plugs in motor slightly worn with oil residue.will buy new.Motor cranks...seems eager to come back to life.
In all i think i fell into a pretty good deal, for what i paid...1000.00$$ Needs alittle work but in the longrun i saved about 4000.00.
Pretty soon i will be on two of the biggest fishing ponds in the state of Texas. I live right smack dab in the middle of them . Sam Rayburn Resivoir and Toledo Bend Resivoir, East Texas.
Thanks for all the help fellas, i will keep i touch, any advise will be used to fullfill the quest. Still alot of work, but its progressing rapidly now that i found you guys!!! Thanks!!
...jas....

Re: Tilt and Trim Question

I just bought some for my 150 you will have 2 cupped rings two square (quad) rings some regular o-rings and some backup rings (Teflon).look at yours before you take them off, put yours on the same way, don't let them twist, the teflon rings are stiff try not to strech them when installing I have the home made spanner ang it works well. good luck!
