Tilt and trim questions

Well end of last season I picked up a new to me boat, 93 stingray with a 3.0 mercruiser. Well while getting it ready for the season I opened the tilt and trim res to check the fluid level and the fluid was looking milky so I figured I must have water in it, I siphoned out all the fluid into a gatoraid jug and refilled it with some hydrolic fluid I had for my plow, I figured I would run that then do another fluid change after it mixed with what was in the lines to help get it all out but to my surprise the fluid looked exactly the same as what I pulled out after running it up and down 3 or 4 times.

Now my first question would be would there be enough in the lines to mix in and make it look exactly like what I pulled out or should I start thinking there is air getting in the line??

Also I left the jug with the old stuff in it to sit overnight and there is NO separation, it looks exactly as it did when I pulled it out.

I have never worked on a trim system but am pretty handy when it comes to things like this so I am not afraid to pull things apart and rebuild or replace.

And last question is should I use hydrolic fluid or something else? Would ATF be ok to use and what kind if so?

Thanks
Ray

Ayuh,... It's the simplest of hyd. systems,+ will work with about Any oil lighter than 50W....
but works best with oil of about 10W,... Like ATF....

so does that mean that could be the problem (weight of the hydro oil) or is that just what I should use?

Thanks for the input

Re: Tilt and trim questions

Ayuh,... My guess is your initial thoughts were correct,+ you should probably exchange the fluid,...
I've never seen any oils that are Milky, other than when contaminated with Water,...
You could bleed the system out by hand,+/ or using the trim motor,...
Depending on which places you can get to the lines,...

It's well covered in the Manuals found in the Adults Only section.....;)
