i just bought a used cmc hyraulic power lift and installed it along with a relay and switch. before i installed the power lift i was able to test it by connecting it directly to a battery to go up and switch the wires to come back down. the switch is new...it had just up and down. now everythin is installed and when i push the up or down button all i hear is the click for the relay but nothing else happens. how can i troubleshoot this? i know the lift is working. the switch is new. how can i check the relay? is it necessary to have? the relay came with the lift and the guy told me it costs about a hundred dollars. help!

Re: tilt and trim troubleshooting

Yes you need the relays. The hydraulic pump requires too much current for the switch. The switch actuates one of two relays. When the relays are off, both power leads to the motor are grounded. The switch activates one relay for up and the other for down. Whichever relay is activated connects 12 volts to the hydraulic pump.

Since you know the pump is good, if the relays are clicking and the trim isn't moving, you aren't getting power to the relay contacts. Check for a disconnected power lead to the relay box or a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

but since I can read +/- 12vdc on the wire that connect to the motor, would that mean that my relay's, fuse, and circuit breakers are good. I am taking the reading on the connectors that connect to the wires on the motor. Thanks

Maybe. Make your voltage measurements with the pump motor connected. If one of the relays has high contact resistance you will see the voltage drop significantly when you actuate the relay.
