I have a 1996 (actually a 97, E50ESL EU ) 2cyl 50 spl. The OEM tilt/trim unit that fits this is a #438135. They fit 1989- 2000 40 & 50hp motors . In looking around for one I noticed that Some Yamaha and other brands are similar in appearance and look like they would fit into the narrower space that the OEM unit fits into. That's about 6" wide. I don't know what the retracted overall length is or the extended travel length of the cylinder are on the OEM unit. I don't have any info on the other brands either. The wiring hook up is not a concern. I can make an adapter. Does anyone know the measurements of the OEM unit and if you can interchange with any other brands on this application?

The concept of the SPL model was economy / lower price.-----Therefor no trim / tilt or oil injection from factory.

do you not have your old one?
No I don't have the old T&T or gas assist unit. I picked this motor up last August. It is a very clean and well kept motor. I just got around to mounting it on the boat. That's when I then noticed that it has nothing and I mean nothing on the lower leg to even hold it against or to the cavitation pin. Lifting of the motor when in reverse is unhindered as well as if you strike something going forward at speed. The previous owner forgot and lowered the motor (I'm guessing with power) with the trailer locks in trailer position and sheared both of them off too. Power tilt and Trim I think is my only option.

Well I managed to find an OEM unit made for my application so the question is no longer relevant. Thanks everyone for you input.
