Tilt gear issue

I just got this 69 - with a omc drive and I am having a tilt issue. I lowered her and raised her apparently with out much lube inside ( I should of checked first) when I lowered her back down she kicked out this metal cap and the gear spindle came out- chipping some of the metal that holds it in. Now that there is lube in there it works ok but if I lower the unit down too fast it kicks out the cap. I'm afraid I may lose it in the lake If im not careful. Any suggestions on how to safely seal this cap back in?

Re: Tilt gear issue

Those ebay parts won't help. That style cap is held in by a snap ring. The groove for the snap ring has broken off and there is now no way to retain the cap. OMC did have a fix for this, it was a bracket that bolted onto the housing and covered the cap to hold it in. The bracket is no longer available so you are going to have to fabricate some sort of bracket to hold in the plug.

I did'nt think I saw anything to cover the cap. I just fixed a large c- clamp to the plug. I put the top of the clamp towards the boat and the actual swivel plate to the plug. Its solid and from the sounds of it this will have to be my solution - thanks for the help

Mine has a 3 screw triangle cover.

That one you have is different.

Just saw for 50 bucks a whole intermediate on ebay.

I wonder is there enough room for a clamp? You getting water in that way also.

I see your transom is ahead of the trailer rollers, can those rollers be moved ahead?
If not, there will be a lot of pressure on the next pair of rollers, wherever they are.

The round piece was the cover. Size of a nickel. Water getting in that way?

Re: Tilt gear issue

I really don't think water can get in. No fluid is getting out- with the clamp- the plug cap thing goes in far enough for the rubber gasket to be surrounded by metal. I'm going to try it out on the water today. I don't have a manual yet- can anyone advise me (or direct me) on the process of changing the fluids on the outboard.

Re: Tilt gear issue

I also have a 69 OMC Stringer drive. I learned the hard way not to just drop the drive straight down without a couple of stops in between. I managed to break the tilt shaft the first time I dropped it. My boat has a "self centering" toggle switch to lower the drive and it takes about three bumps on the switch to drop it. Going up is no problem, just raise it up non stop. I haven't had the problem you're having with that cap, so I can't help you there. Hope this helps in some way...I'll follow this Thread to see if I can help ou out....Pappy

I wouldn't trust a C clamp on that.
Like Tslanson said I would fabricate a bracket to hold that plug in.
Also I would put a good sealer around that Oring seal on the plug.
If you need I can make a bracket at work and send it to you.
I just need a little time to get back to the marina to get some measurements
off a drive like that.

Re: Tilt gear issue

Here is my set up- it seems to hold pretty good - but if you could help me fabricate something a little more practical that would be awesome.

Re: Tilt gear issue

Does that clamp get in the way when you turn to the left?
Looks pretty close to the drive housing in the picture.
Maybe can you mount that roller to the front of the crossmember, then it would be supporting the transom.

Re: Tilt gear issue

I thought it may hinder the turn but it comes about a half inch away with a full turn. I will flip that roller around to the other side. There are about 4 or 5 more across the trailer but its kind of silly having that big one just sitting there. Thanks
