I have been testing my tilt motor and now know it is shot .Mine is on a 1972 merc 1150 inline 6. The motor and pump is one unit. I pulled the top plate off the motor and one brush was not on the spring, and the other side has no brush. Very corroded looking. I can post pics if needed.
Can this motor be fixed? If not, what can I look for that will work for my set up?

Can the motor be run in the water by using the lock tilt pin until I get a pump motor?

72MERC-- You are probably better off getting a new pump and motor assembly. Several places carry them new or aftermarket subs. Best bet is ebay around $40 to $85 plus shipping. You can use the tilt pin in the interm :) , just disconnect the hoses at the pump and hire someone to tilt/lift it up for you :p as you will be lifting against the rams.

Here is a pic. By the way, it has a sticker on the unit saying it is only to be used with a Merc 140 or 150.

Take it to your local auto electrician, they can take a quick look and most likely supply a new set of similar after market brushes, probably cost you about 20 bucks

Years ago I had an 85 hp Merc and the tilt motor stopped on it. I went to a small engine shop and took the motor with me. I bought the whole endplate with the brushes installed for about $35 bux at that time. It was for a lawn tractor starter motor but matched and worked perfectly. Probably more money than that now but worth a shot. You also may check with a shop that repairs electric motors and see what they would charge to rebuld it if necessary. If you are going to get the brushes I would have the armmature checked at least.

I have found a few sites that have the end cap with the brushes for that same price. I would still like to get the rest of the motor checked before I spend money on the cap.
Is the Armature the wire that is wrapped inside the main motor housing? If so, it seems like an auto parts store might be able to check it.

Armature is the partin the center that turns when electrical power is supplied to the motor.

Take the rascal to a starter and alternetor shop and I'll bet they can rebuild it.

c/6
Hooty

I found some brushes off an rc motor and soldered them on. The springs seem to be good. I put it back together and tested the motor wires with jumpers to the battery. Black wire to neg on batt, pos to blue wire on motor, then after blue tried green. All it did was spark. So I guess it needs a whole rebuild?

I'm taking it to a couple of places tomorrow to see what can be done.

Well I can't seem to find anyone around where I live to fix my tilt motor.

If I were to put a new top plate on the motor, which contains the brushes, should that be all I need? I did find a few websites that sell the top plate.

How could I check the Armature myself?
