When the one in the picture operates does the front of engine raise or lower? They do make some noise which is normal. Sometime the steel hydraulic lines will rust and leak . Or the rams on the side of the engine will leak. If the brushes are either stuck or worn out they can be repaired. If the brushes are stuck you just have to free them up, there may be a small ball bearing in the end of the shaft to keep it engaged in the pump. To reinstall the brush head use a 3” length of stiff wire bent into a “V” to hold the brushes in their holders, after the brush head is seated then pull out the wire, if you try to force the brush head on you will destroy the brushes.
The one down on the port side rear lifts the drive for TRAILERING & BEACHING. Never try to plane the boat off without the drive in the full down position unless you want to spend around 2-3k on repairs.

On my motor, the trim makes noise when up and down is depressed, but nothing moves. I can't find a hydraulic resivoir. I haven't stressed about it, but my trim doesn't work. Not sure if that's a have to have, or a nice to have...

On my boat, the trim motor is the reservoir.
it has a top full plug and a bottom drain plug. I put fluid into the motor and moved it up and down, drained all the old fluid, put new fluid and kept doing this till new fluid came out of the drain plug. I left it raised up for about 3 weeks and half of it leaked from the cylinders that raise the engine. Oh well, shouldn’t leak while on the water for a weekend.

From what i understand, it’s a nice to have feature, helps the boat handle better in water.

Ok I put the clutch pack back in and every other part it needed to test the function of the tilt and after fighting trying to align the worm gear with the pack with the cover for about 2 hours, I finally bolted it up and it works! Sort of.

I didn’t fill it with fluid yet because it might not have worked but it does. Not sure if it’s because there’s no fluid in there but it does hesitate to go back up. From dead bottom it goes up a bit then stops. Kenny May have been right again!

At this point I’ll look at oem prices and if too much, I’ll just use a strap to lift it up out of the water if the oil doesn’t help. As long as it goes down and stays down! Pretty tired of the boat now. LOL.

Hey everyone.

I can finally say I am done with this thread, for now at least.

New parts were installed and clutch packs filled with oil and the drive is finally tilting!

To anyone who ever comes across this thread with similar issues, here’s what was wrong with my tilt/trim.

1 of the noises I heard at first was a whirring/buzzing sound. This was the trim motor just spinning because it had no fluid, put new fluid in there and the trim was working.

The clicking/loud thumps I heard we’re associated with the tilt.
Clicking: Tilt solenoid clicking because the tilt motor housing was grounding out on the intermediate housing.

Thumping noise: The few times the the motor did not ground out, the drive would try to move but the clutch pack was almost seized from water rusting up the internals.

So 1.) make sure your tilt motor housing still has the protective film on it and does not allow it to short out through the intermediate housing.

2.) make sure your clutch packs are not rusted and seized.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Once I figured out how it comes out, I can get it out easily. I really have taken it out about 10x or more now. I do have the exhaust manifold off and a few other things making it easier though.
I just ordered a new one. Going to put it in when it gets here and try it.
Shocking that I removed that motor 10x+.
The tilt motor gave out last week. The bilge did get full of water last season (my mistake) and I think that was the last ride of the season so the motor must have internally rusted.

Just looking at the tilt motor gives me a headache now.
I have a new one on the way and new exhaust gaskets as it seems “it makes things easier”.
