Tilt Motor Not Working Properly ?

I have a 86 bayliner aq125b with a 270d drive. I was on the river all day with it working fine, then the last dock of the day I went to raise up the lower unit and it was making a clicking noise. Now the motor was powering sand it sounded like something was stripped and just clicking, The outdrive was moving up and down about a 1/2 like it wanted to lift just wouldnt. My main purpose of this post is I have no idea how that tilt operates so Im not sure what to look for or were to look. Does it run in the bellows ? is it internal ? any help would be awesome. It is a mechanical worm gear.

In case you do not have the factory manual, Look up the following page:

And then drill yourself down AQ125B and to "mechanical lifting device" as well as "connecting components". Should give you the information you need to locate the problem.
