Tilt motor question on 200hp Mercury

I have a 1992 Mercury Offshore 200hp. Tilt and trim were working fine around 1 month ago. Worked just a little today as if the batteries were low(which they were a little) so I put a charge on the batteries and now it just clicks. I have a brand new battery and when I try to raise or lower it just clicks. Any ideas on what I should check?

sonds like the trim motor may be going bad. the only way to know for sure would be to bypass the relays and connect the trim motor strait to the battery. if it still dosent work the motor is bad. if it does work you have a wirring or relay problem.

For general information. There isn't anything much harder on a series wound motor, like a starter or trim motor, than a low battery. The reason is that current is limited by the back voltage generated by the rotation. If the voltage is low, the speed is slow, and the current goes off the charts. It's the current that makes the heat that kills em.

I know it is possible, but I find it hard that the trim motor has gone bad all at once. I noticed that there are 2 little boxes on the rear of the motor that will click when I try to raise/lower the motor. Are these relays? Does the motor have to come off the boat to fix/replace the motor if that turns out to be the problem?

lets try and think about this as a 12 volt starter motor on your car,...when you go to start your car , and you hear a clicking instead of the starter turning,... it is either a bad battery OR poor connections at your battery....start with cleaning up your battery terminals,...your battery cannot charge if the terminal connections are poor or corroded....nor can it transfer electrical power to components...give it a try , ya can't hurt anything by cleaning your battery terminals...if you have a volt/ohm meter ,check the voltage at your battery terminals before you clean them,...if you show less than 12 volts you will have your answer.If you show 12 volts or better at the battery, check the voltage at the hot terminals (usually the red wire)and ground at the trim/tilt relays...if less than 12 volts, clean those terminals as well...good luck bro !

It is possible that the high current caused by low voltage could have toasted both relays. They are barely adequate for the job in normal use.

There's 2 big posts on each relay. If you jump between them with a heavy piece of wire, (or a pair of pliers you don't care for) it should run up or down. If you don't get any motion, either the wiring from there to the motor (including ground) is bad, or the motor itself is bad.

That's all assuming there's battery voltage available at the relays.

I am starting to fear the worst and think it might be the motor after all. I noticed before it quit working that the motor would hardly come up, but it would go down fine. Now all it does is click for up and down. I did keep trying to get it to come up and down when it was dragging. Could I have messed it up?

Assuming that it is the motor, the boat motor is in the down position. How do I raise the motor in order to remove the trim motor? Thanks for the help!

there should be a screw or bolt to release the fluid pressure to rhe ram. it is usualy accessed through a hole in the side of the engine mount bracket next to the trim pump. loosen it one or two turns and lift the motor up manualy.

Be sure you don't loosen the trim oil fill plug when it's down. It's under very high pressure.

Look it up in your owner's manual.

Thanks for all the help! The only manual that I have is the Seloc manual. Looks to cover the tilt and trim ok. The only thing I can't find is the trim oil fill plug. Found what I think is the relief screw on the right where Joey Maneri said it would be. The only other screw that I found was a plastic bigger screw on the left side which I took out. Just a little fluid leaked out but not much. I will post a picture if it will help.

I am having the same problem if anyone could point me in the right direction of how to get the electric motor off without pulling the outboard.
