Tilt on 1964 Johnson 9.5 HP Model MQ 10R

I can't seem to be able to tilt my newly acquired Outboard. There is a rectangular knob on the left side (as you face motor) that says "Push & Turn"

Tried it while lifting up (not the easiest) and nothing happens. There is also a lever on the other side that says "Tilt" in one position and "Lock" in the other. I tried in both positions, still no help.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Take the hood off and study the gearshift linkage. You will see a flat lever that pulls up a thin rod as you shift. That rod has a collar, retained by a setscrew, at its' bottom end (outside, by the tilt lock hooks that grab the tilt pin.) You will have to adjust that collar up or down on the rod so that it releases the hooks in neutral and forward, but locks them in reverse. But it's kind of futile if your motor has broken rubber motor mounts.

You should be able to tilt in neutral, if not, shift to forward and try it. The control is a wire that looks like a bicycle wheel spoke that runs to the lock down the center of the bracket.

When you have the motor tilted up, you need "..... a lever on the other side that says "Tilt" in one position and "Lock" in the other...". That releases the tilt so that you can let the motor down if it is working correctly.

Thank you for your prompt reply, In examining the gearshift linkage, I see that the assembly mainly forces you to start only in the "Start" position, which is slightly more throttle than the "Shift" position. Not fond of this feature, as I find that slightly more throttle coaxes a cold motor to start easier.

There is a flat lever that moves a rod with no set screw but I would need to remove the flywheel to get at it.

Possibly we are talking about different motors or I am too unskilled to follow your instructions. Would a picture help us here?

Mr. F R,

I reread your suggestion, and indeed, there was a set screw on a thin rod on the "outside bottom" just as you said. I adjusted same (what a pain, as the set screw was difficult to get at). It took me 2 hours having lost my touch with hand tools over the years. But patience and perseverance still works for me.

I now have the tilt working in Forward, but not Neutral, and surely not Reverse. Good enough for my needs.
