Hello All,

I just got my first boat. Its a glastron G1700 (1992) with a Volvo Penta I/O 230.
WHere is the tilt sending unit located and how do I replace it?

There is another sending unit attached to the steering lever.

There are trim and tilt buttons on the throttle handle. How is the trim set? The tilt button wouldn't do anything if the trim button is not pressed along with it. I do not see any other movement but the up/down adjustment of the drive unit when pressing the buttons.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Jerry,

I can read 230A from what is left on the engine label. it is a 4-cylinder OHC made in 1992.
the stern drive has a SP/CD TRIM marking on it. Most probably it is a 290. Looking a the pictures for a 280 and a 290, the stern drive on my boat has a hydraulic cylinder and pump of which the 290 picture indicates it has.

Here is a link to the OEM manual for your drive. http://www.4shared.com/file/85931397/45d46aa9/DP-D.html

Starting on page 150 you will find the trim sender and it's adjustment.
Here is how you can test the potentiometer (Trim sender).

Thanks for the link, Don. The manual was very helpful.

Like was I said, this is my first boat. I am done rebuilding the carb and cooling system. The only remaining work are the trim senders and the upholstery. Maybe some cosmetic paint/gelcoat job. I am looking forward to taking it to the lake for the first time in three weeks.

I'll put up the post-work details then.
Thank you all.
