Tilt trim down quits randomly

4o hp merc 4 cyl 1997 occasionally the trim down will not work and will always trim up but the button on the motor and the button on the remote control will not work for trimming down. I can switch the wires inside the engine reversing the polarity to the motor to get it to go down but not up then when I put it back it won't go down. It always to this point has started working sometime like 2 to 10 minutes later unexplainably. It seems like there is some kind of a overload switch in play here or something anybody got any ideas thank you for your help

Its either the switch in the handle, the wire or connection.
When its not trimming, use a voltmeter and have someone press the switch and see if power is switching to the white/green wire. If it switchs at the switch then flow to the wire at the connector.

I've had both the switch on one boat and the connection at the plug go out. This is for a sterndrive, but yours should be wired the same
