I have a 1986 I/O Chevy 350 engine with OMC outdrive. All of a sudden this weekend the trim gauge is not working properly. The drive will move up and all the way down as it should but the gauge will not reflect the correct position. (full down only shows halfway on the gauge.) There is no sign of any leaking. Any suggestion what to look for? Thanks!!!

Re: Tilt/Trim gauge not working

Is this a Cobra drive? If so the sender is on the starboard side of the gimbal housing.Turn the steering hard to the left and you will see the black plastic sender held on with 2 screws. The wires go through the transom bracket and plug into the harness.A lot of times the sender goes bad or the connection where it plugs together behind the engine.Sometimes a cleaning of that connection does the trick.
The sender is like a reostat switch, you can test it with an ohm meter..

Thank you Gary! This will require that I take the boat out of the water. I will try this when the boat is out of the water. Thanks!

Re: Tilt/Trim gauge not working- HOW TO CHECK?

Hi guys,

I have same problem with my 5.8L OMC with Cobra stern.

Gary said you can check it with ohm meter. How do you check it?

I have the same problem on a5.0 merc '02

Then you should start a thread of your own, and not just stick a post on the end of some 3 year old thread. Besides your engine is completely different from the original posters in fuel, ignition, electrical, wiring, manufacturer, outdrives, you name it.
