Tilt/Trim general info?

I recently was given an '84 Sylvan 18ft by my Dad, that has a 90hp Evinrude on it. The tilt/trim unit quit working several years ago and Dad has taken the unit off the boat. I have it, but know NOTHING about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn about it and then start trouble shooting?

Thanks!

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

To start with, there should be a motor on the unit with two wires, one green and one blue. One wire is alternatively positive or negative depending on which way you throw the switch on the remote control handle.

Test the motor by applying 12 volts positive to one wire and negative to the other, then reverse them to turn the motor the other way. If the tilt cylinder and/or trim cylinders move, let them extend until they stop, then reverse and let them run the other way. You can oil or grease the rams if they are extended.

Edit: sorry TD I didn't see that coming. I think the 90HP all have two wire PT&T motors except for 1981.

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

I don't know a model number at this point.
Would that be specific to the tilt/trim unit, or an engine model #?

I've read the rules, done searches, tried to post in the proper section, and provided as much relevant information as I could (or knew was needed.) What part of that thread were you trying to point out? Or did I miss another post somewhere?

Ezeke... thanks for the info, that's a starting point.

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

When performing maintainence on your new motor, you will need the model number for ordering parts, etc...

Look on the port side stern bracket, an id tag should be located there. Short of that, look for a welch plug. It is about the size of a quarter, and at the top rear of the motor.

Post the model number so we can get a specific year for you. I would then get yourself an OEM Service Manual. It will pay for itself a million times over, trust me. Check ebay, www.outboardbooks.com or right here on iboats for a factory reprint.

As far as the PTT, find out why your father removed it. Symptoms, any troubleshooting done, etc... so we can get it operational for you. May be an easy fix, may not, but will not know until we get more info.

Good luck.

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

All my dad was able to remember was that eithee the tilt or trim quit working a few years ago. he took it to a shop and they said was probably some o-rings leaking. they said that if it wasn't a problem for him that he should wait till the other (tilt or trim) died because he'd be paying twice as much if he fixed them seperately. I also know that both relays have been replaced.

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

The first thing to start with is checking to make sure the tilt/trim motor itself works. Follow ezeke's advice and see if the motor itself works. If the motor works as it should, check your fluid level. Facing the tilt/trim unit from the back of the motor, the resevoir is on the right hand side. On that resevoir is a fill screw. Raise and lock the motor in place (there's a manual release valve on the right hand side near the transom bracket). Remove the fill screw and see if fluid seeps out. If not, add fluid until is seeps out then cycle the motor a few times to bleed the air out. You'll probably need to have someone activate the switch while you assist the motor up and down by lifting up on it. Repeat that procedure until you can no longer add fluid. At that point, raise the motor to a certain point and stop to see if the motor creeps back down. If it does, you need to put new seals in the tilt/trim unit.

I recently put new seals in my tilt/trim unit for an 85 'Rude 90hp and though it's a little messy, it's not overly difficult if you have the correct manual (I used an OMC service manual). The seal kit isn't overly expensive (less than $50 if I recall) and cost far less than buying a good used tilt/trim unit or an aftermarket CMC unit.

If you can extend the rams, you can also check to see if they are corroded or erroded to the point that they cannot seal properly, if that is the case you may want to consider buying a recycled unit from a salvage yard.

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

I took the unit to the marina to chit chat and get the engine model number. he through it on the bench and it works fine. Donalt know if it will hold weight yet or not. Since he has the boat to look through and check everything else, he's going to install and check. It's another hour of labor, but worth it for me to know it was done right this time. I'll start doing more work when we're not so anxious to get on the water.

Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Tilt/Trim general info?

I got the engine on my 225 ocean pro up and filled the resevoir, although it didn't seem to be low. It operated up and down in a jerky not smooth motion. After it went all the way up I can't get it to go down. The moter hums and sounds normal. Is it possible The fluid I put in clogged something? There was some dirt on the cap that might have gotten in the system.
