I resently purchased a 18 foot Center Cosole to go fishing on. The boat included a 1985 Johnson 90 hp V4 2 stroke engine. The boat ran great. Everything was working. However, the tilt trim system started making a clicking noise when i would raise and lower the engine. I asked around and everyone told me it was the hydrolic fluid and it was low. So I decided to add some more. However the nextr time i went to lower the motor it went down alright and then when i went to raise it nothing happened. The tilt system made no noise when i pressed up but made a whine when i pressed down. The engine didnt move either way. Now i cant even put the fluid in because the engine is locked down. Is there something locking the engine down? Or is there something else broken on the system?

Thanks

try swapping you're relays, if you're in you're boat looking at the motor, with the cover off there should be a rectangular box looking at you about mid motor. open the box and you'll find two ice cube type relays, if the problem reverses when this is done you've found you're fix, the realy is about 20 to 30 bucks. hope that helps

Clean the contacts on those fittings/ screws in the black box. They get placqued. I've also noticed that if you lower the engine too moch (140 VRO) it will automatically cut off the power on the tilt but will eventoally reset itself. I would gather dirt first, cutoff second and bad relay last

This may not be your problem, but on my 84 model evinrude 90, (the controls are prolly the same as yours). My trim would work down but not up. Come to find it was the button in the shifter. Couldnt push it in far enough to work unless you lifted up on the bottom end that stuck out and jiggled just right. Might wanna check yours just to be sure.
