Tilt trim issue

I just purchased a 1989 Larson DC 190 and I can't get the motor to raise back up after using the tilt trim switch to lower it. The person I bought the boat from told me about this and said he thought it just needed a solenoid replaced. He gave me a part (think it's the hydraulic pump) that has 3 wires screwed to it and a fluid reservoir for what I'm assuming is hydraulic fluid. I put the new part in today and I get the exact same results. When I press down on the tilt switch, I can hear it engage. When I press up on the switch, nothing happens. My question is, could this be a solenoid? What does the solenoid look like (new to boats and never worked on motors or any mechanics)? Is there anything else I could easily look in to to fix this?

Re: Tilt trim issue

In case I can't get this working myself, I plan on taking it to a local boat repair shop, but the motor is down and I can only lift it about 2 inches. Do I need to dis-engage something that will allow this motor to lift up?

Re: Tilt trim issue

Remove the rear trim cylinders mountings, lift the drive up and tie it there. Then tie the trim cylinders up.

Can you provide any links that might assist in this? Not even sure what the rear trim cylinders would look like.

Re: Tilt trim issue

If it is a Mercruiser there should be 2 hydraulic rams that are attached to the drive just above the plate over the prop. They have a nut on each side and a pin that goes through. Just take one of the nuts off and twist it to take the pin out. When it is out you can then raise the drive by hand and tie up all the parts.

FIRST, Dont Panic. Testing procedures are in here. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Techbk/94/94hsa6.pdf . You need both a good positive connection AND a good negative connection for things to work.Take a jumper from the battery to the blue wire from the motor, drive should raise, a jumper to the green wire and drive should lower.

Did you try the trailer button? or try jumping the solenoid. Check for corroded wires and or bad ground. I recommend using a test lamp to track it down.

Re: Tilt trim issue

A little more info. I took the throttle lever apart and my Tilt trim switch has 3 wires connected to it, Red, Green, & Purple. I disconnected them and when I cross the Green & Red, the motor lowered. When I crossed the Purple & Red, nothing happened. I then tried crossing the Purple and Green and nothing happened.
How exactly would I "jump the solenoid"? Here's a link to a picture I took of all the connections. I did notice there is 1 screw with nothing connected to it, but I have no clue if anything is supposed to be connected to it or not. http://www.jasonmportraits.com/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/HydraulicPump.jpg
Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can get this resolved myself and not have to pay a boat repair shop.

The handle wires are laid out in the pick below. The pic below is for a newer model so you will not have the Yellow wires. Someone has done some rewiring for you to have Red and Purple wires. With the up not working it means either your solenoid is bad or an electrical connection is not being made. Back at the pump you should be able to jump the main red wire (one with the inline fuse) to the Blue/White stripe wire on the solenoid. Jumper to the smaller of the Blue/wht wires. If it does not go up, jumper to the larger Blue/wht wire post; this will jump the motor directly.

Note in the pic below the Blue/wht wire goes through your trim limit switch.

when i got my boat back from the guy i hired one of the things he did was install neutral warm up on my shifter, so when i got it home the first thing i tried was lowering and raising the drive. so, down was up and up i have to push the trailer switch.
