Hello to all!! (first post),

I have an 88' bayliner capri1750 w/ a 85hp force (outboard). When I tried to run the tilt/trim the motor I could hear it trying to run then stopped and now I get nothing. I made sure the battery had a good charge, but every time I try to run the t/t it trips the breaker inside the motor compartment.should i be checking my relays or a solenoid??? please help!! And thank you in advance!

Re: tilt/trim issues

Welcome to iboats. :)

Chances are that water got into the trim motor and rusted things up creating a short.

Re: tilt/trim issues

Willy, I opened up the motor and the brushes and armature are in great shape(no rust)but the magnet surrounding the armature is cracked and missing a piece. do you think this could be the issue? thanks for the welcome and response!!

Re: tilt/trim issues

the motor power is roughly equal to the magnet size. if the piece of magnet missing is big then the amount of power lost is similarly big. If the piece of magnet missing is the size of a dime, then the motor should still work. It just won't have as much power and the motor will lift more slowly. At some point, it won't have enough power to lift at all. I don't know where that point is, but it's definitely not smaller than a quarter.

nonetheless, there are two problems.
1) where did the magnet go?
it is very likely that broken off magnet pieces will jam either the armature or brushes and cause the motor to seize. It is not unlikely that rust flakes could end up doing same with brushes.
2) if one piece broke off, then what's to say that another won't break off soon after fixing it?

a new arco motor is $209
http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/Merchant...ore_Code=eBasicPower&Category_Code=OB-CHRTRIM

a rebuilt prestolite motor is $190
http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=75028F

Re: tilt/trim issues

RRitt
Thanks for the info RRitt, When I took the motor apart I was able to get all of the broken pieces of magnet (I think) out. They added up to about the size of two quarters. Is it possible to buy a new sleeve (motor case/ with new magnet) or will I be stuck buying a new motor? The armature and brushes are in great shape. Thanks for the links as well, I really appreciate it!!!

Re: tilt/trim issues

if they are the thickness of a quarter then you're probably okay. if they are thickness of magnet AND the size of two quarters then I'd be surprised if it worked very well.

I don't think you can buy a new housing.
check API marine web site.

Maybe you can find someone that wants to sell a motor with burned out brushes. I have one, but I don't want to sell it.

Re: tilt/trim issues

RRitt,

Thanks again for the help! I pulled the motor apart (again) and sure enough there was a piece of magnet that was lodging itself between the armature and the housing. cleaned it up and it works like new!!! Just in time to hit the lake for some fishing.
