I can not seem to find any reference in my Cobra manual as to the any scheduled time frame for changing trim & tilt fluid or power steering fluid. 1988 5.0 cobra with original fluids in both. Yes the oil is dark in color but levels are always fine with no apparent leaks. Any comments?

Re: tilt & trim oil

Those Fluids Usually aren't Changed,... Unless there's Contamination...........

ATF, or a Light Weight engine Oil will work Just Fine in either of the systems.......

Re: tilt & trim oil

Ha! I was just about to post the same question (well, not regarding the power steering). A few related follow up questions re: the trim/tilt:

1. My Seloc manual says to use one of the following for the trim/tilt: MS, SD, SE20W, 5W-30, "or equivalent". Is the 30 weight engine oil I use in my Merc 140 considered an "equivalent"? I already have it handy!

2. I have no idea what type of oil is in the trim/tilt reservoir right now. If the answer to the above question is "yes" and I elect to add the 30w oil, will I cause problems if the oil already in there is different?

3. The manual also says "anytime the trim/tilt system is serviced for any reason, including the opening of a hose or fitting,.....the system must be bled" I assume you don't have to do this if all you do is top off the reservoir?

Thanks guys!

2 things wrong here. First you are going by what an aftermarket manual says, not the OEM manual. And it is not the same.
Second, the original poster is asking about an OMC, not a Mercruiser. So any Merc info has absolutely nothing to do with his OMC.

Your best bet is to start your own thread with your questions about your MERCRUISER, this thread is about rojoc's questions about his OMC trim system.
