I have a 1995 Four Winns with a 5.0 OMC Cobra Outdrive.

I have an intermittent problem. When I adjust the trim, up or down it kills the engine.

Any ideas as to what could cause this problem.

Sounds like a short in the t/t, check the breakers on the front of the motor, chase the wires may have a bare spot on one of them. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks

I thought the up and down trim functions where on two seperate circuits, and since it does it in both directions i thought I could rule out a short, but I will check.

I think there was an OMC service bulletin on this, something to do with the resistance wire, see if you can find an OMC dealer who may be up on the old TSB's for Cobras.
It seems that running the trim pump drops the voltage to kill the motor.

The most common problem was the two 50 amp. fuses on the engine. One is for the engine and the other is for the trim. The connections don't hold the 50 amp fuse tight and the (solder) in the fuse melts because the connection isn't tight. You can tighten the three holders for the fuse and replace the fuse with a new 50 amp. fuse.

Vinney is absolutely correct -- I was having an intermittent (sp?) starting problem last year with my OMC 5.0L engine. Turn the key one time and I'd have voltage...turn it off and then on again and nothing. Very strange! Wiggled the wiring harness around in back on top of engine (with key in "ON" position and the voltmeter gauge would pop up to 12V. Turn key off and then on again..no voltage again. Checked the 50A fuse for main starting circuit and it was visually corroded inside the glass tube and like Vinney said, had bits of solder inside the tube also. Changed both fuses and havent had a problem since. And now carry a few spares on the boat -- just in case! NHLake, try changing the fuses first (Inexpensive test) because with my corroded 50A fuse, it would also kill my engine if I tried putting on my bilge pump, or blower, etc... not all the time but probably 75% of the time until I changed it. Good luck!

Thanks for everyones help, it turned out to be a loose battery cable, I guess the alternator can not handle the load of the trim motor on its own. I tightend the cable and everything is fine.

Thanks again

NHLake,
I had the same/similar problem on my 94 four winns 190 horizon. every time i hit the button to bring up the lower unit to gain speed the engine would sputter/hiccup...and lose power.

the wiring harness for the t/t should have a clamp on it holding the two ends together. mine did not. if yours does not...it is causing a short in the circuitry. I have a 5.0 with EFI.

i posted this issue in the forum.
jkarch
