I have a 1987 200 HP maniner on my 393 ranger and for some reason the tilt&trim
is leaking down just won't hold in place. There are no leaks not a drop! So why
would it do this? it leaks down slowly but if you watch it you can see it drop/
it works fine other than this problem.
any help please.

there are check valves in the pump. The seals on the check valve are small and delicate. they typically wear out in the 20-30 year range depending on fluid used and working pressure. If water enters the system or you use fluid with cleaning agents then the life can be cut in half (or less). When the check valve start leaking then the system drifts down.

Thanks RRitt, Ok is this check valve in the pump where I add fluid, Or where the trim motor bolts on? this is the three ram system
I know i,ve seen systems with hoses running to the battery area and then like mine all one assy, made to the motor.Clamp all outside.

thanks for the reply.

I'm guessing you have similar system to my 88.You need to remove port trim rod, this is where check valve is located.Clean check valve and inspect seal in cap, also some rods have a filter screen on bottom of rod,if so clean it.Engine needs to be secured in full up position to do this job.Of course release pressure before proceeding and have oil pan ready.Good Luck.

Re: Tilt& Trim problem

A manual would help with procedure.Make sure you release pressure first by manual release, then loosen filler cap for remaining pressure. Then unscrew cap and remove rod.Only clean valve, don't try and remove it.Post a picture of unit so where on the same page.
