guy's,
My 1991 225 Johnson is having problems with the tilt and trim. She is very slow and sometimes sticks going up or down. It has a gurgling sound. I added more fluid and she runs a hole lot stronger now.
The problem: She is leaking fluid from the top scraper seal on the tilt shaft. The motor is very rusty and is probally seen it's days. I'm thinking of replacing the hole system. How much can I expect to pay and can anyone recomend a source?
Thanks
Stoked not

Re: Tilt trim problem

The sticking and gurgling may have been low fluid.

The leak, more than likely just a seal gone bad. They are not that hard to replace if you have the spanner wrench.

A motor is about $100 bucks I think....

In '92 they changed to the Fastrac trim system and swivel bracket. Not sure if they will fit the old style, so make sure of your year before ordering.

Mine is 24 years old and I have replaced the motor once and the seals twice.

BTW my guess the bypass is closed all the way?

Guys,
I'm picking up a replacement Trim Tilt tommorow for my 1991 225 Johnson. It look pretty simple to change out. Looks like I need to remove the retainer clips and bang out the upper and lower pins. How can I suport the lower unit while removing the T/T. Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks
Stoked Not

To hold the engine up, I use an engine hoist, so I just take it for granted. How ever way you find to hold it up, really think safety here. You don't want that engine coming down with your hands in the way. Is there any way you could tie it up overhead, or a good stout table, or stool comes to mind. Lets here how some of the other guys do it.
