I have a 1989 Celebrity 181 with 175hp merc with alpha one drive, it has the buttons on shifter bow up, bow down, and a trailer button below those. when my drive is all the way down and i hit the bow up button it rasies it about 1 inch then the motor stops, then it does nothing, but to get it the outdrive up a push the trailer button then it works going up again, is this normal or is something wrong?

Re: tilt/trim question

Water, There is a trim limit switch on the outdrive. This switch allows the drive to trim up a small amount, using the trim up button, before it stops (limits) the trim action. It sounds like your trim limit switch is defective. Your options are to have it fixed or use the trailer button which bypasses the switch. I vote for the latter since I trim by engine sound and boat feel, and the trim limit switch is not necessary.

In addition on your wiring harness, near the trim pump, there are two bullet connectors (Purple wire) which goes to the trim limit switch. You can unplug these and connect them together, thereby bypassing the trim limit switch.

Re: tilt/trim question

The trim limit switch in on the outdrive pivot bolt. It is covered with a plastic cover and two stainless screws. One pivot bolt has the trim gauge sender and the other has the trim limit switch. Both of these break all the time, since they are exposed to the water.
