Tilt/trim Ram question.

Just wondering, I have a pinhole leak in one of my rams and would like to fix it myself if possible. I was wondering if it is safe or not to grind down where the leak is and weld it back up? What type of metal are the rams made of? Hopefully not aluminum, my welder doesn't get hot enough.

The main reason I ask is because of the hydraulic fluid being flammable.

They are Alluminum. Could try some JB weld. Don't let it leak, it will ruin your stringers.

I have removed the rams from the motor, should I go ahead and disconnect the lines to them? There is no leakage inside the boat.

Yeah you can disconnect them. Just mark them so you know which hose goes to which ram and which goes to the top and bottom of each ram. Where is the hole at?

the cylinder of the ram, not the seals.

About halfway down the cylinder there is a pinhole leak. Welding it just scares me due the the hydraulic cylinder having the same properties of a pipe bomb.

Do you have a mig or a tig; set up for aluminum?

Yep, it is best to take it apart if you even get the correct welder; it wouldn't blow, just not work, due to the contamination.

This thread is a bloody mess - what the heck kinda trim cylinders we talkin' bout?
The OMC 800 series ones? the walls are almost half an inch thick - you aint got a pin hole in one of those....no way

Mercruiser? buy new parts - dime a dozen and you can't effectively weld an alum. hydraulic cylinder that's at 1500 psi lots of times and prolly spiking to double that as you hit waves....

OMC Cobra? - eBay is the way

I was thinking the same thing but he was talking about fluid in the boat so I assumed he is talking about the stringer setup. How would a merc or cobra cylinder leak in the boat when they're outside the boat?

hehe...then how is the fluid getting into the boat? The old OMC "Stringer" systems are all inside the boat. I guess next time say "I have a MERCRUISER" or an "OMC COBRA"

It's not getting in the boat, I posted that way up there ^^^

I figured you might have been talking about leaking from the pump.

My bad, I understand now. You were concerned about welding due to the possibility of it igniting the hydraulic fluid. I thought you were concerned that it was leaking fluid in the bilge and the possibility of fire. LOL! I don't know how I missed that.
