I have a 40hp evenrude the tilt trim up has quit and clicks I am going to replace most likly both relays while I am at it. When I tap on it it works for a short time so must be bad. Question when I pulled the relay there was a black sticky substance on the blades. Is this normal the down switch also has this but it works fine is this something to be concerned with. Also can these relays be bought at a auto supply store??

Thanks Tom H

That's some gunk they put on them at the factory. When I replace relays I put dialectric grease on the blades. You may not have a bad relay. Clean up all the blades and check the ground wire on the back of the box.

In general, if the relays click they are ok. Does the tilt motor run-can you hear it? You can test the tilt motor by finding the ends of the green and blue heavy wires going to it and hooking the wires up directly to a battery. Switch the wires around to change from up to down or vice versa.

The motor works great. I will clean the blades this P.M. after work and check again, if it was a ground wire wound't the down relay give me problems also or are they two seperate grounds?
Thanks
