HELP
I have an evenrude 40 hp. 2 stroke 1997 vintage. The power tilt/trim device does not operate. Tried all I know to jump switches go directly to battery ect. Now trying to remove
bottom shaft came out with little effort. Top is giving me fits parts breakdown shows a bushing at top of ram that is the item that I cannot remove. Center of bushing is treaded so I installed a bolt to to push out the bushing, the
bolt broke off in the bushing. Any suggestions ?

Re: tilt/trim removal

Welcome gerfer.
Simple question but does the trim/tilt motor operate, i.e. can you hear it when you press the switch? If not, you should be troubleshooting the electrics & tt motor before you pull apart the hydraulics.

What are your symptoms?

If the motor does not operate, you need to find out why. This doesn't require dismantling the hydraulics.

I'm not familiar with that model but I think you should be able to unbolt the motor and lift it off. One of the experts could confirm this.

Re: tilt/trim removal

Trouble is, the rear screws holding the motor on are very hard to get to. The motor, if it's not even trying to turn, may need brushes or there could be a break in the leads going to the motor.

Gerfer, I don't really know of any bushing with threads in the tilt ram. All you need to do is raise the engine, remove the tilt ram pin keeper and pull the pin out. Open the maual realease screw a couple turns and push the tilt ram down. Disconnect the unit at the bottom and the whole unit should tilt out for access.

Re: tilt/trim removal

OBJ Don't have a manual. Where the tilt ram connects to engine on the pump side I have removed keeper pin cannot move pin itself. I'm talking about the oposite side of ram at same piont the retaining pin does not go all the way through. There is a bushing that supports the ram at that point. That is what I am having a problem removing. Advise if you have any suggestions, or do I need to remove this item how does the retaing pin come out pump side or other. Regards

Re: tilt/trim removal

The threads in the pin are for removing with a slide hammer. Go to the opposite side, the side with the retainer pin, and tap the pin out being careful not to peen the end of the pin over. The pin is a press fit.

OBJ Thank you very much. I didn't want to apply to much force not knowing how it came apart. Now I can have a real go at it. Thanks again I will post my results. Regards

Re: tilt/trim removal

if its a saltwater motor you will find oxy/acetylyne a wonderful penetrant as well :)
some of the OMC 2 bangers of the late design pin have caused me much aggrevation, some gray hairs and a small increase in vocabulary. good luck
