I was having a problem with my T&T motor. So I removed it from reservior and repaired it. Now I can't get the thing to go up or down ,even though the motor is running. What is attached to the motor shaft?? Its Johnson 40 hp. 1989 yr.

Re: tilt &trim unit problem

BruceW, motor shaft slips into hydraulic pump assy when put together.assuming it is engaged in pump unit perhaps unit is low on oil or there is air in system that will have to be bled out.

Hello BruceW It will take up to 18 oz. of oil to refill then bleed it off a few times ,,I did mine here a few days ago but only promblem I had has it was bleeding off slow and still does the same thing even after I redone the thing goes up just great but still creeps down on me some told me it was the valve release on the side I guess I'll try that next

Re: tilt &trim unit problem

ob, how do I know when the motor shaft is engaged. It does not seem to attach to anything. I guess I'm looking for an inpeller or something like that.Of course this is the first time I've worked on this part, don't know what I'm looking for. So if there's any air in the system ,it won't work? not too frustrated yet......Bruce

Bruce , motor has either rectangular tab on end or spline set-up that will align with pump assy. You won't be able to see the actual pump impeller ,but rather the end of its assy and the input shaft. If yours is splined when stabbing motor onto unit manipulate it until you feel it drop in.If it is rectangular tab prealign motor shaft with pump unit reciever shaft and push in place. If motor is running freely after secured it is more than likely in place now.Fluid will have to be topped off and bled to attain piston movement.

ob, your right, when I took the motor out the little hex shaft fell into the oil out of sight.I removed the oil and saw something loose in the bottom. That put a smile on my face. Replaced shaft, aligned with motor ,put the oil back in and BINGO....its works....now I have to figure how to wire it up..It came with a 3 wire harness, up ,down, power, where's the ground or negative wire?? Bruce , don't believe there is negative wire. motor makes ground through mounting ,like starter motor.Hope this helps.
