Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

Hi guys, have a couple of questions (what else is new?) lol

From the below pictures, my question on #3 is where does the OTHER black wire go from the throttle, and my big question I guess is can I bypass the fuse box with my tilt/trim wires or should I keep them there? Also, is one set of wires coming out of the engine for UP, and one for DOWN, or is one for TILT, and one for TRIM (fast and slow)?

I should note that I hooked up the 3 wires from my throttle to the 3 on the wire coming fromthe fuse box first thing this morning and she tilted DOWN, but not UP. Then a little bit later, whatever I did I only got a noise from the fuse box, no action.

Any help GREATLY appreciated, as always,
Scuda

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

The green and blue wires from the TNT motor....green is down, blue is up. The two black wires from the TNT sender goes to the trim gauge. Don't bypass the fuse....it protects the TNT motor.

Pic 3....the tan wire goes to the overheat warning horn. Two black wires in the harness...one probably has a yellow stripe?...one goes to one "M" on the ignition switch and the other black wire goes to the other "M" on the ignition switch.

Is this the info you needed?

Thanks OBJ, a big help, a couple of clarifications if I may. If these sound like stupid question, please bear with me. :)

Also, I don't have a trim gauge, do I need to worry about the blacks then?

Pic 3....the tan wire goes to the overheat warning horn. Are you referring to the 2 blacks that come off of the throttle assembly?

Thanks again!

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

If we are talking of the 83' 200hp in your sig line, the trim sender is on the inside of the port transom bracket.

The two wires from the sender go to the junction box. One connects to that white w/pinkish wire (it's listed as a tan stripe). The white with tan stripe connects to the "S" (signal) lug on the trim gauge. The other black wire from the sender, goes to the ground terminal in the fuse box....(which should be called the relay box) The black wire from the box would go to the "G" lug (ground) on the trim gauge.

In the number 3 pic, I thought you were referring to the engine harness. From the above, does it make more sense now? I had to check a wiring book to get the right color codes for your rig.... :)

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

Hi OBJ,

Yes, trim sender is there, with a blue and a green. 2 blacks are coming out also, those are for the trim gauge you said right? If so, can I forget about them for now, since I don't have a gauge?

Also, it seems the person who wired this up is more of a moron than me because he put in an "extender" cable which was BLK/WHT and the colors were reversed on the ends.

Now I can go only one way, up or down (I reversed the wires to put the eng back down), but not both. In theory I should be able to hook those wires (blue and green) staright to a battery and they should work right? I don't mean always, just for troubleshooting purposes. I guess what I am wondering is that there is nothing else involved other than power to those cables right?

Thanks a million OBJ, I just might get this yet!

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

Hi guys, is it possible that one of the relays in my box is bad?? When I try to trim up, it just clicks, if so, what do I call that part and where can I get one, any marina?

Thanks again,
Scuda

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

They are called trim relays Scuda. They are the same so what you can do is swap them around and see if the problem reverses. You can get them at any John/Rude dealer and even NAPA carries them in the Sierra brand. PN is 586224.

Got an idea for ya....drop by the local library and dig out a Clymers or Seloc service manual for your engine and make a copy of the wiring diagram. Both manuals have the diagrams in the back. It sure would help.

Re: Tilt/Trim Wiring Question

Got it!

Want to thank you again OBJ, for being patient with me. I got a new relay, put that in and still had problems. So,I gutted it all, recut and properly attached all wires, heatshrink, the whole nine yards, runs great. If I have learned anything on iboats, it's if you are going to do something, do it right! Now on to the tach.......hoo-boy..

Thanks again
