I've got a 1973 135hp Johnson and it's running good, but the tilt motor sound's like it's running fine but is slow picking up the motor. I checked out everything and the only thing I could find that didn't look right was the passenger side tube (shock) don't really know what you call it looks dry when you raise the motor all the way up. Took it off and it's not holding any commpretion. What do you call this part? Need to know where I can replace it. Thanks ahead for the help

Re: Tilt &Trim

Welcome to iboats mitchell6!

The port side cylinder is the trim cylinder....starboard side (right) is the tilt cylinder.

I need to ask, is the fluid level in the reservoir OK? If you need to check it, remember that you do this with the engine tilted all the way up. If you need to add fluid, fill the the reservoir to the bottom of the plug hole, losely put the plug in and cycle the engine all the way up and down 3 to 4 times and check the level again. The cycling bleeds the air out of the system. When the level stays at the bottom of the plug hole, it's good to go.

Re: Tilt &Trim

Ok got me a different cylinder, now 2 quick ??'s. Do I need to take the plug looking thing off the side and put fluid in it before I put it on? Or does it just fill itself up when your making the motor go up and down. You said earlier I needed to go up and down about 4 times is that by hand or with the tilt motor?
Thanks for your help

Re: Tilt &Trim

No need to prefill the cylinder. It'll fill itself and vent back to the reservoir as you cycle the engine up and down. You will have to add fluid through this cycle to get the reservoir up to the correct level.

And don't take that plug off the side of the cylinder....that's your trim sender to the gage. There's a little ball and spring under that cap. Lose them and no trim gage signal.
