while trial fitting the bracket assembly for the J/E 120/140 on the transom, i found that the 1st 2 threads on the port side tilt tube to be slightly damaged. <indented>
am unable to get steering tube wiper/grease retainer to thread on.
can i get a die to clean up the threads or would a jewelers file be ok?

Re: Tilt Tube Threads

I'm betting that a small triangle file will do the job.If that grease retainer isn't new ,bare in mind that those little plastic muthas are a common source for water intrusion causing corrosion and finally sticky steering rods.

Re: Tilt Tube Threads

i will be getting a new one due to that reason.
before i bolt up the midsection i was checking steering & what not.
i upgraded the old corroded 80s bracket to a 1995 assembly off a 225. yes parts research was done to be sure.
-
i agree the triangle file will work fine, didnt know if they made a die or thread cleaner for those type of threads. i have another tube that could use a good thread cleaning incase i have to us it instead.
thanx
