Tilting mercury 18 hp motor

I have a 18 hp mercury electric start and can't figure out how to release the tilt lock. Does the motor have to be in neutral? Thanks, Lenny.

If it's a rebadged Tohatsu 18 HP motor move the tilting lever to the other side, rise motor up till the tilt mechanism is released and will be able to fuly lower the motor to vertical position. Never mind if it's a original Merc motor....

Mines a 35 hp, i have to put it in fwd to tilt it up. I'm going to look at it to see if its just an adjustment or if its just built that way.

What 18 hp? If it is mercury built it needs to be in forward to tilt it.
