I have a wooded lot next to my property that the owner is going to have the timeber cut. The buyer of the timber noticed that I have a real nice Black Walnut tree. It is a little over 26" at the base and goes straight up to 50'. Of course at the top, it is probably about 16". He wants me to call him. I would like to know about how much I should expect out of this tree before he offers me a quote.

Re: Timber Question

Black walnut BIG BUCKS Big big bucks.

I would call around to mills and eliminate the middle man to get prices.

Re: Timber Question

Figure you've got roughly 2200 board feet of prime clean lumber, what's dried walnut worth in your neighborhood?

Re: Timber Question

Your county may have an agriculture extention service with a forestry person advising woodlot owners.
I would try to contact them for an idea.
They can likely put you in touch with reputable buyers that might bid against each other.

Re: Timber Question

I wouldn't get in a rush to harvest it. Take a look at the stocks on some high end shotguns. Just the wood to make your own is spendy. Good luck.

Re: Timber Question

There's still folks around who build high-end, hand-made furniture, would probably love to have that wood. Maybe check around for local saw mills who could cut it up for you? You could cut it, mill it, stack it in your basement/garage, sell it off a few pieces at a time? As long as it's off the ground and out of the weather, it'll sit right there waiting on the right price! Sorta like that antique heart pine that folks love for wood flooring. Good Luck!

Re: Timber Question

Around here if it is close to the house or in the city the mills wont touch it, but then it would be his problem then. Right?

Re: Timber Question

Well, I did some research to find out what the going stumpage was. Went back out into the woods and did a closer look at it. Its not as tall as I first thought as at about 34 feet up, it branches out into a Y. Several knots also. The guy from the mill came out to the house and we met. We walked out to the tree to hagle over the price. We both decided that there would be about 800 to 900 good board feet.

When I researched, the price is about $1,000 per 1,000 board feet. I told him I wanted $1,000 and he offered 500. I said no way and started back to the house. Then he offered 700 and I still kept walking. He went up to 800 and I took the offer.

I still have 14 that will be ready to harvest in about 10 years. Plus there are many smaller ones that can be harvested by my kids way later on. Thanks for getting me in touch with the Ag department. It gave me some great insight on terms and knowledge.

I have 3 very big ones in my yard and no one has been interested either, reason being, around homes, folks pound nails in trees and these ruin the planners and saw blades when cutting. Glad you were able to get some good funds for yours.

I sure did. Finding out it is nice to have something bigger than a garden tractor. It quit raining enough to get some sod plowed. It did fine pulling that single point. I do believe it is strong enough to pull a 2 point. Found a 8' pull disc for $450. Plan to go get it next week. Just maybe I'll get a garden in before it is too late. Since the 1st of April there has been 56 days and out of those days it has rained 42 of them. At least I don't have to worry about my work shop getting flooded anymore.....Thanks for asking......SS
