You're supposed to winch the boat on not float the boat on, floating on is what caused the strain in the safety chain.

When you have finished winching the rear of the boat should be sitting on the rear rollers and once you get that right the winch adjustment will become apparent to you.

For what it's worth I think you could go for a bigger winch, 1450 lbs on a full spool could be a bit small for your boat.

I have a Fulton heavy duty winch that's rated to 3200lbs max with a 3/16 cable. Is that not enough? I think the next size up is electrical and I'm all set with those. I tried to winch the boat on and that's when it stripped. I put my trailer in just up to the top rollers so I have to winch. I'll try it now with the cable wound properly and adjustments I made. I am having the handle welded on since Fulton won't do anything about it.
