Okay at the end of last year I tore the bearings and gears up in the upper unit and didn't have the money to fix it and the boating season was over but I am going to order a upper unit in a couple days. I am not sure that I had the alignment perfect when I got done rebuilding the motor and doing all the work last year which is maybe why I tore it up. But I do have the alignment tool and everything. But not really sure how much force it should be to push the tool in or take it out. I could do it but not sure how easy it should really be.

What I am asking
1. What is the best place to order a upper from for a 5.7 1.50 ration 85 alpha 1 gen 1 from? The best I found was 595.00 shipped anywhere.

2. How much force to push tool in or out to make sure I have it right again before reinstalling new outdrive?

IF the gears went out of the upper, I would be concerned that the lower was also contaminated, since they share the same oil. I would sure be checking it out to find out so you don't end up replace the complete drive soon after replacing just the upper.

Alignment..... Read and Watch this thread. It will answer your questions.

I figured nothing to big can get to the lower since the oil hole is so small and I am going to flush out the lower very very well and hope that dosen't happen.

Ayuh,.... The Odds are stacked High against that scenario...

Without a total tear-down, cleaning,+ inspection...
The Steel Soup has permeated the bearings in the lower...

Yup I always teardown, inspect, and reseal the lower after an upper gear failure and there is always particles present. And no, alignment will not cause upper gear failure. Water/rust issues or lack of oil main causes. 'nutcase

Okay I will look at a new lower also or atleast tear it down and clean and replace anything that needs replaced. I had everything apart last year to do new floor and re gasket the motor, did bellows also and didn't finish the boat till spring, then used it a couple times last summer till the upper went out. I replaced the u-joints not sure if I could of damaged something doing them. I didn't tear the upper apart to do the ujoints just fought them all together.
