The no water out of the telltale is a problem. The water leaking between the lower and mid is not. It's not really a "sealed" joint. But it sounds like you may have some issues.

The telltale...that's the word I was looking for before...lol...peehole was my non-technical descriptor :D

Quick question: My outboard leaks water at the seam where the lower unit bolts up just above the cavitation plate...It actually squirts water out or there and doesn't have anything comming out the pee hole...Is this a major concern or do I just need to replace the hose and seal on the inside. I've never had the lover unit off of an outboard, but I have on an IO...any thoughts??

Unless there has been a telltale retrofitted to it i dont think that model actually had a factory fitted, are you certain it actually has one, i cannot see one in the pic.

Great looking rig btw.

Good point Mark. That old Johnson doesn't have a telltale. At best it will spit a little water out of the exhaust relief ports.

That being said, on any motor where you don't know the history, it's best to change out the impeller.

Thanks for the info mark...I'll check and see. I just assumed all outboards had them.

Nice rig, welcome to the Starcraft armada:)

That is a great hull for hitting the big lakes around here. Very dry ride and plenty of freeboard.

I agree that it sounds like you will want a healthy dose of gluvit on all the interior rivets and seams to stop/prevent leaks. It contains a chromate primer that adheres to bare aluminum well.

Great start on the resto, will be a great fishing boat for ya!

I was in your area last weekend fishing the St. Joe near Niles. I love that river, lots of room to operate:D
