Update . . .

This is the port side settee base. (loosely fit)

This skin came out the best so far.

I am using the 3M 77 adhesive for the 'sew foam' and that is working out much better than the water-based stuff. One more base to go, then it is onto the seat backs.

I am starting to work on the backer boards for the seats. There are 3 hinged seat sections that open up into storage compartments

1) Port settee base
2) Center of the U-shaped seating base
3) Aft portion of the u-shaped seating backrest.

The Center base would typically fall into the storage compartment IF a heavy set person were sitting there and the ocean conditions were a bit rough. I was not sure what I was going to do to remedy the situation . . . that is until I took a look at the backer board.

It has a channel routed out in the center for the tack strip that holds the center of the vinyl skin down tight (along the center seam).

It certainly explains why the seat would give way, as the flange area of the storage compartment is not that wide and causes the seat base to find its way into the compartment, given enough force.

My plan is to double up the backer board with a section of plywood . . . hopefully it will straighten the board out and give it enough stiffness.

This is the largest seat base . . . about 80" long. gluing the sew foam was a bit of a challenge with such a large piece of vinyl, but it all worked out.

Probably will start sewing it together tonight.

Then, I'll be fabricating the seat backer boards so I can put them all together. Got to make room for all the backrest pieces and the sunpads.

Consider using 1 x 2 or similar size lumber on edge. Glue with an instant-grab constriction adhesive and use screws through the backer board into the strips. Weight it or clamp it to a flat surface top-side-up to run the screws in. You may even want to counter-bow it if it is really bad.
You will get the stiffening without much added weight. The added wood will have to fit within the opening of course.

I looked for an example in my camper build pics, but I don't have a pic of the underside of this cover. The 3/8" ply cover in front of the bunk has one 1/2" x 1" strip on edge (glued only, no screws) running lengthwise and it is rigid under my 260 lb self standing on it with one foot. Previously, it flexed badly.

I thought about ribs, but didn’t want anything that would protrude too far into the storage compartment.

If the plywood breaks, then it will be titanium ribs :D

Here is the largest of the seat bases ready to be given the final seam. I am using a combination of basting tape, clips, and staples to hold the pieces together in alignment while doing the sewing.

I'll have to grab some plywood this weekend so's I can make the new backer boards. Got to remember to get some mixing pails for the OTWS to treat the wood.

It has been cold ( 10˚ F +/- ) the past few days, but I'm going to have to seal the wood in the garage. Sunday it should get up to 45˚ F though . . . :noidea:

One good thing about winter in the northeast USA is the beer & wine stays plenty cold in the garage :D

I just logged on to Iboats for the first time in a few months, and here is your thread on upholstering the boat. I wish you good results and luck.
You seem to be on a good track, I applaud your willingness to back up and redo things that don't meet your standard. That is key to a satisfactory result.
I redid the interior in my last boat, a 19.5 foot bowrider. And it came out just OK. There were a couple of crummy puckers that I ended up living with because summer was coming. Nobody noticed, but I knew they were there.

Nice going!

This is the forward section of the 'U'-shaped seating. It is a mess . . .

Looks like I'll be re-building this one.

FWIW - I took this seat assembly out about 5 years ago to do some work under the cockpit and it was fine then. I think once rot takes hold, it goes quickly.

agreed on rot moving quickly

my guess the rot happened this season.

I have panels that I pulled every year to access some wiring when I upgraded the speakers a year prior to the resto, and they both are rotten messes.
