1972 Johnson 50 hp. Runs good and shifts okay on ear muffs. As soon as engine is put into gear IN WATER, it stalls out. The boat was winterized and did sit for a full year before use. It had to work out some bad gas, mixed with new premium fuel.

Is it a good time for a carb rebuild? Compression was tested and it was good. What should I expect to pay for a carb rebuild with a kit at a shop?

man you have more threads started on this same topic...hard to know where you are at.

You have to have an idle adjust somewhere.

Set idle in the water in neutral to begin with and then fine tune idling in forward.
My 2 cents. If still rough then it is time to look a little deeper.

I was just quoted 190.00 by a guy here in MI for cleaning and rebuilding 2 Carbs. I'm working on figuring it out on my own for 13.00. 2 cleaning kits 4.99 a piece. 1 bottle of carb cleaner 2.49. Lots of great info on here. Make sure to use the search feature.

I have carb kits coming..15 bucks each x 4 for my e140txcdc..

I dont trust my tach.. is there another way to set rpms in the water that is relatively accurate?? or is there a good way to see if the tach is working so i can set that in the water??
